AFT-Maryland President Marietta English Statement on Supreme Court 4-4 Split Decision in Friedrichs Case
The split decision by the United States Supreme Court maintains the lower court's ruling and four decades of precedent that fair share pay is legal. This is a huge win for the working women and men of our nation. It allows for continued collective bargaining and for employees in public workplaces to have their united voices be heard.
While the Center for Individual Rights is petitioning for a re-hearing, we know this is just an attempt to undermine any sense of democracy in the workplace. I echo AFT President Randi Weingarten that while the chapter of this particular case may be closed, our work to engage members and their neighbors around a shared vision to reclaim the promise of America only continues full speed ahead.
Marietta English,
President, AFT-Maryland
