A long-standing campaign to secure exclusive bargaining rights for Unit G professionals at the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has reached a critical milestone.
Since before January 2025, member organizers have worked diligently to establish union representation so Unit G employees at MSDE can collectively negotiate over wages, benefits, and working conditions. While employees initially sought representation in January 2025, the required level of support had not yet been achieved at that time.
For years, MSDE Unit G employees have operated without the protections and structures afforded to other represented employees—most notably Labor-Management Committees (LMCs) and the ability to collectively enforce the provisions of the MPEC Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The absence of a unified, collective voice has left MSDE professionals without meaningful representation in decisions that directly affect their work, careers, and conditions of employment.
That has now changed.
With well over the required 50% + 1 authorization cards signed by eligible employees, the legal threshold for majority support has been met. As a result, a representation election is not required. MPEC’s forthcoming submission to the Maryland Public Employee Relations Board will seek formal recognition of the union and extend collective bargaining rights to Unit G professionals at MSDE.
This achievement represents far more than a procedural step. It is the restoration of a collective voice for MPEC members at an agency that has been excluded from union representation for far too long. Through recognition, MSDE Unit G employees will gain access to the same tools, protections, and collective power that other state professionals rely on every day.
“With MPEC Shop Stewards Training right around the corner, I can’t wait to make it official,” Shop Steward, Myron Mason said. “MSDE organizing committee is ready and waiting to lead their Agency to a new day of collaboration in leadership within MSDE.”
