February Steward Training

Stewards are the lifeline of public employees unions and that is no different for state workers in Maryland. The Maryland Professional Employees Council (MPEC)  and AFT Healthcare-Maryland (AFTHCMD) brought together a host of activists and leaders for an important stewards’ training on Friday, February 23, 2018. Jacqueline Raines of MPEC was the lead facilitator for the day but the staff of both organizations played a vital role in preparing the stewards for their duties. 33 professionals from MPEC and 11 healthcare professionals attended the training.

The day contained important conversations that stewards need in order to be good stewards at their various worksites. The instructors discussed the differences at the respective worksites and also shared best practices for engaging fellow state employees. Many stewards were made aware of all that the union does for them and for fellow state employees.

Following the training, the stewards were motivated, encouraged and eager to represent their respective unions in their workplace. They were more aware and informed of how to respond to the needs of members.

This is the first of three 2018 trainings that are offered to members who are leaders and activists in their worksites.  If you are interested in joining the second cohort of steward activists, send a note to Jacquelyn Raines, jraines@mpecmd.org or Robin Raynor at raynor.robin@gmail.com
