Member Engagement Meeting

Members from the Maryland Professional Employees Council and AFT-Maryland staff met with a goal of developing ways to strengthen the union and increase membership and activism. The group discussed various ideas and exchanged best practices. Many of the suggestions have been effective in rallying and activating members.

Among the topics discussed were issues, actions, and allies. Some of the most pressing issues included workplace safety, labor-management committees, and communication and updates. The actions that were discussed were union-provided training and membership engagement among other things. As for the topic of allies, members determined there was a need for more state staff and member collaboration. Members also agreed they needed other allies within the state federation including teachers, and a need for healthy advocacy and interaction between members and legislators.
