When we fight… we win! That was the battle cry at the 2018 Maryland Professional Employees Council annual member meeting. The meeting addressed the Supreme Court’s Janus decision but also focused on upcoming battles the union would be undertaking. Staff and members received thorough overviews from Royale Simms about the state of contracts and the give and take of previous negotiations with the state. Simms also spoke about many of the day-to-day challenges members of the bargaining unit experience. Members appreciated the thorough and candid conversation in Simms report.

Maryland Professional Employees Council members and staff were in Annapolis to lobby on behalf of their membership. They came to the state capitol to discuss ensuring Maryland state professionals were priorities in the state budget. President Jerry Smith and chief steward Ronnie Myers had meetings in both houses of the General Assembly.

Other members and staff had the chance to engage with other legislators. As usual, the pension was something of great interest to members. MPEC took meetings with the chair of the House committee on Health and Government Operations Del. Shane Pendergrass. Also

Bargaining Update

Dear MPEC Member,

We are pleased with the quick action and progress on strengthening the State's Workplace Bullying Policy. After presenting deficiencies in the policy to the State's contract negotiation's team, the State issued directives to all state HR Directors that require an immediate response to bullying allegations. Additionally, we pressed the State to require MDOT to implement the policy immediately, and they complied.

On Friday, June 23, MPEC members stood up at the Rally for Respect against Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation's (SDAT) illegal sick leave policy. We will not stand idle while sick leave, and thus families, are attacked.

We are calling out the State Department of Assessment and Taxation (SDAT) for failing to recognize the dignity and respect of the workers of the State of Maryland by trying to side-step the law.

On June 7, 2017, SDAT implemented an illegal sick leave policy that required employees to disclose private medical information to justify the use of earned sick leave.
